The world is just getting smaller and smaller. With the onset of the Internet technology, the email correspondences and the cellular phone, miles and miles of distance seem to be an issue only of yesterday.

However, it is not only the means of communications that makes the world smaller. Sharing something with other people in the other parts of the world is a better way to have some sort of connection.

People of different ages, nationalities and languages are able to share the sentiments over their favorite past time. They all partake of the longing to look for more stamps to add up to the collection.

What is it really about stamp collecting that make people love it?

Stamp Collecting

Stamp collecting involves the act of saving stamps from the mails and searching further to gather stamps. The stamp collectors can look for very old stamps of other civilizations or simply acquire high-valued ones. They represent more than the value of the postage service in delivering the letter. It also provides one way of looking into the history, culture, politics and art of a certain civilization.

Collecting Stamps

Collecting can be very inexpensive in many ways. Simply gather all the mails in the household and collect the stamps attached. Some people pursue having pen pals abroad to start on their foreign stamp collection. It will not hurt also to ask other friends . More often than not they will be willing to give the stamps from their mail stack.

Simply seek for another stamp collector and trade with one another. There may be stamp clubs in the vicinity or in school that one can choose to join.

Another way for collectors to gather more stamps is to buy from stamp shops or from the postal service. The ordinary stamps will not cost much, they can be purchased at face value. Some items for advanced collectors and the high-valued stamps can be very expensive. Still these stamps are really worthy, so for a serious collector, the price is nothing.

To get a guidance in stamp collecting, it will be very helpful to get a stamp catalogue. This will showcase the stamps with its details and even the price. It can also be a good way to know the value of the stamps in the collections.

Stamp Collection Equipment

Stamp collecting will have to entail the care of the items. There are actually little equipment required to support this hobby. A stamp collector needs only a stamp album to accommodate the items. Some mounts can be acquired to properly attach the stamps to the pages. Other stamp albums have plastic strips where the stamps can be easily inserted.

Tongs and tweezers may also prove to be helpful in stamp collecting. They are good tools when removing the stamps from the letters. These stamps are not to be forced away from the paper. There is a proper procedure to remove the stamps at the same time ensuring their preservation.

It is best to tear away the part of the envelope with the stamp in it from the rest of the mail. Then soak this in water for a few minutes. The stamp will then separate from the paper as the gum gets dissolved in the water. Use the tongs to pick up the stamps and to mount it to a proper place.

Serious stamp collectors also consider inventory of the stamps as an important element of the hobby. These written inventories can prove helpful to keep track of the collection and to know the details and valuations of the stamps acquired through the years.

Stamp Collecting in an Advancing World

Many people feared that stamp collecting may dwindle as the Internet technology give less reason to send a mail to a correspondence. This was expressed before when telecommunications was feared to overpower the mailing system. Still, stamp collecting remained and flourished.

The Internet technology may even actually be a good thing to for the stamp collector. It may be a good way to meet people who share the same interests. It may even bring stamp collectors together.

Stamp Collecting Software

One good thing about the Internet is that it provides another resource for the serious stamp collectors. It can provide numerous information about stamps all over the world. It can even be a venue to purchase stuff like stamps, stamp catalogues and more.

Some stamp enthusiasts with web sites even developed some software that is something for a devotee to enjoy. The stamp collecting software contains the important information and images and they are all about stamps.

This is also the best tool to organize the collection. It can also serve as a good stamp inventory software. With this, you can easily keep track of those stamps, their numbers, date of issuance as well the purchase prices.

Another better thing about the online community is that you can have such wonderful software products for free. Some web sites dedicated to stamp collecting allow their regular members to have this as freeware. Sometimes, all you have to do to get the software is to give your email address to receive future updates and information. Nothing to lose at all.

So, as you proceed with the stamp collecting hobby, make sure that you grab hold of the stamp collecting software for free!

The Many Collectible Items

Posted by teenhobbies on September 15, 2008

Collections can range across many different items, from common everyday items to obscure and exotic items. A woman in Missouri that collects Barbie’s might think that collecting match books seems strange. However, the woman in Florida that collects those match books from every hotel she has ever traveled to finds her collection invaluable. These match books remind her of all the memories of her trips. So, who is to say what is really normal or weird?

Some collectors might collect lunch boxes, while other collectors might collect anything that displays Mickey Mouse. Some people think that anything of value that people collect can be considered a collectible. This is not necessarily true. There are some people out there that collect telephone books. Now some people might not consider this to be a collectible, because a phone book does not really hold a value since they are usually given free to the public. However, a collectible item is considered to have value if people are willing to pay money for the item. The old saying that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” certainly holds true for the collector.

Why Not Join a Chicago Stamp Collecting Club?

Posted by teenhobbies on June 14, 2008

People from all walks of life will always find some profitable if not gratifying hobby to engaged with. This is according to the study in the U.S. conducted to some 100 people who were interviewed according to the kind of hobbies they are currently engaged with. Nearly 86.3% responded that they are into collecting, where almost 30% of it were into stamp collecting.

This statistical report goes to show that more and more people are into different hobbies, where stamp collecting is notable gaining a considerable fair share in the market. In fact, in the United States alone, some 20 million Americans are approximately into stamp collecting.

With a great number of stamp collectors, some people have devised a strategy to organize them as well. That is why stamp clubs were born. Most of the states in the U.S. have their own stamp clubs that are situated in their respective cities.

In Chicago, there are some known stamp collecting clubs that can help you with your stamp collecting hobby. The two known Chicago stamp collecting clubs were the Chicago Air Mail Society and the Chicago Philatelic Society. Another group that is involved into stamp collecting is the Collectors Club of Chicago. What is different with this group is that they are not actually petitioning for any members. The group is focused more on promoting the concept of stamp collecting itself.

Anyway, the problem with most stamp collectors, especially the newbies who are not yet affiliated with any of the stamp collecting clubs in the U.S., is that most of them tend to think that stamp collecting clubs are only for the experts. They thought that since they are just still beginners, they seem to not fit with the group.

The point here is that members of stamp collecting clubs were beginners also some time ago, and because they are so much interested with stamp collecting, they feel that talking to people who have the same interests like them would be more gratifying than the hobby itself. That is why they have these stamp collecting clubs.

Hence, if you are in Chicago and if you are a stamp collector, it is better to be a member of a stamp collecting club than anything else. Joining a Chicago stamp collecting club is an added pleasure to this remarkable hobby.

Here is a list of some of the advantages of joining a stamp collecting club:

1. Friendship

Like any clubs, stamp collecting clubs foster new friends. It promotes friendship in a new level of social context, where you do not only get to meet different people but you also get to find people that you know but did not have time to get acquainted with until you have joined the club.

2. Enables you to gain knowledge

The best thing about joining a stamp collecting club is that it lets you learn more things about stamp collecting. Each member in the club tries to contribute new information regarding the different aspects of stamp collecting such as places to get good collectible stamps, tips on how to identify stamps effectively, or some pointers on how to properly “mount” or keep your stamps.

3. Additional activities

Most stamp collecting clubs organize monthly activities for their members. They even conduct some special meetings or seminars regarding the hobby and even invite some well-known people who, like them, are also into stamp collecting.

4. Good trading point

If you are into trading stamps, joining a club is the most profitable way to do it. Stamp collecting clubs conduct trading sessions where members get to trade their stamps with the other members of the club.

Best of all, stamp collecting clubs offer discounted stamps that are really worth collecting.

5. Regular information feeds

Most stamp collecting clubs offer the best for their members. That is why they try to update their members as often as possible about the upcoming activities of the club as well as the future events in as far as stamp collecting is concerned.

All of these things are boiled down to the fact that joining a stamp collecting club can be very beneficial to a budding stamp collectors.

For beginners who thought that they are not appropriate to join the club because of their level of expertise, they do not know that it is that time of their lives as stamp collectors that they have to join some clubs particularly Chicago stamp collecting clubs. It is the best way to gain more knowledge about the hobby, obtain more collectible stamps, and enhance their expertise about stamp collecting.

Stamp Coin Collecting

Posted by teenhobbies on June 14, 2008

3 Things to Do When Stamp Coin Collecting Becomes Profitable

Ever since the world began, humans were born to get busy. This is the main reason why most of the people are engaged into different activities life sports and different hobbies especially if they have nothing to do.

One of the greatest and most preferred types of hobby is collecting. It is one form of hobby that entails the acquisition of certain items, particularly those that have value especially as it gets older.

Take for example stamp and coin collecting. Most of the people who are engaged into this kind of collection sees and knows the value that is entailed within the coins and the stamps. The collectors know that as they collect their stuffs, the value gets higher especially for those rare items.

However, the focus of the collection is not basically centered on the value itself. Most of the stamp and coin collecting activity has its focal point based on the interest of the collector. This goes to show that the vastness of the scope and the gravity of the purpose of stamp and coin collecting may vary from one person to another.

By the time the passion for such collections grows deeper, some stamp and coin collectors were known to have their stuffs enter a trade with the other collectors. That is the time when they see the real value of this kind of hobby.

As soon as they start collecting money, they finally realize the extent of income-generating potential of their collections, and so, they convert their stamp and coin collecting hobby into a more profitable endeavor. Therefore, what was once a mere hobby becomes a business in the end.

However, engaging into such kind of activity can be very risky for any one who is into stamp and coin collecting. With so much fraudulent activities happening in the society these days, getting into a stamp and coin collecting trade can put the collector in a very unsafe situation.

Nevertheless, once they get the hang of it and as soon as they were able to know the important things to consider when opting for a more profitable aspect of stamp and coin collecting, profits will surely start coming in.

In order to ensure safety in every transaction, here is a list of some tips that every stamp and coin collector should know before engaging into a trade:

1. Make sure that the trader is trustworthy

That is the best assurance that you can get. With all those unscrupulous people lurking around, looking for some victims, you just have to learn to find someone who is trustworthy enough for your trade.

The best way to do that is to identify if the stamps or coins presented for trade are authentic. This kind of skill can be very tricky for the beginners, but once you get the hang of it, evaluating and identifying valuable, real coins and stamps would be very easy.

Just keep in mind that it would be safer and definitely better to buy or trade your items from somebody who had been in the business for quite some time now.

2. Verify the state of the coins and the stamps

In trading, it would really do you god if you will be able to identify and confirm the condition of the stamps and the coins that you are about to buy or trade.

Take note of dented coins or the absence perforations. This will definitely degrade the value of the item. Hence, it is definitely a useless trade. But if you still want to have them just because you know that they will still be an added feature in your collection, be sure that you will be getting them for a lower fee.

3. Learn to spot a good item from the bad one

Identifying a stamp or a coin during trade can be very difficult especially if you do not know anything about the proper classification of stamps and coins.

Knowing these kinds of classifications can really affect the market value of the items. Hence, if you are into stamp and coin collecting, and have not been engaged in any kind of trade or has not yet been able to classify your stuffs, try to do it now. There is no better time for learning how to classify stamps and coins than today.

Boiled down, stamp and coin collecting can be a very profitable hobby once you know its Ins and Outs. But until then, get more facts, study more. Once you have the confidence and the knowledge to join such transactions, go ahead and earn yourself some dollars.

Role-Playing Game Hobby Collectibles

Posted by teenhobbies on March 18, 2008

Most regular games deal with physical or mental skill, whereas role-playing games are mostly an exercise in imaginative ability. In the basic version of a game, the participant imagines the role of a fictitious character, and then tries to create and weave the story around this fictitious character. The characterization of the imaginative person is the most important part of the game. According to the characterization, the action of that particular character is determined. This action may be successful or failed, depending upon the rules and guidelines that have been previously set. Player has freedom to improvise, of course within the boundary of rules and guidelines. The choices made by these fictitious characters determine the result of the game.

A role playing game generally has no loser or winner. This is the basic difference between other games and role playing games. Sports, card games and other games are mostly competitive games whereas role playing games are mostly social games. Role playing games are played like serials; that means it can be episodic, and played daily, weekly or monthly. There are certain players who like to play role playing games in one session only. Alternatively, there are some players that play the same role playing session for months or years.

Finding The Value Of Your Collectibles

Posted by teenhobbies on March 14, 2008

If you have been into collectibles for any amount of time, you probably have a few that you think could be valuable. While few people get into collectibles just for the money, it is still quite common for someone to make some profit when they resell their items. However, maybe you have had a collectible for some time now and you aren’t really sure how much it is worth. For that matter, you aren’t really sure if you want to sell it or not. Well, fortunately it is possible to find out the value of an item without committing to sell it. If you want to find out what you can fetch for your item, you should follow some of the guidelines that I am about to go over. They are very useful in getting an accurate quote.

First of all you need to have a good idea of what exactly it is that you have. A brand and model is not quite enough. There might be small variances that set it apart from the rest. You should also consider the condition. Ideally, the collectible is completely new in the box, having never been opened or damaged in any way. However, this is not always the case, and the other possibilities have a huge range. Compile all of the information that you can about the item and its condition before you start on the rest of the process. This will act as a helpful reference as you compare your item to the rest that are on the market, and determine if it has any value or if it is worthless.

Next, you will want to check online auction sites, mainly eBay, for your item. Finding your item might be a difficult task since there are literally millions of items on there, but it is possible if you are attentive to the categories that you are searching in. EBay has entire sections devoted to collectibles, and if you look you will probably be able to find the category that yours belongs in. You can search for the brand and model of your item right off the bat, but if you narrow down the category first then your results will be much more specific. After you have found results, check the little box on the left that says “Show completed listings only.” If you look at listings that are still open, you won’t get a good idea of the price, since it could still go up with more bids. Completed listings will show the final value that you can expect.

The Importance Of The Collectible Hobby Industry

Posted by teenhobbies on March 1, 2008

Many people today might not be aware of the fact that the collectible hobby industry is currently declining in popularity. This might be due to the fact that collectibles have taken a backseat to technology. The younger generation of today has taken more of an interest in computers, cell phones, Playstation, Nintendo and Ipods. The slower pace of yesteryear made collecting a fun pastime for children and their families who did not have all the advances of today to fill their time. Families used to pass their time collecting coins and stamps. The baby boom generation made the collectible hobby industry a popular hobby for the individual that wanted to collect any sort of memorabilia. The collectible hobby industry was turned into a billion dollar industry. The collecting of sports cards was a very popular hobby for the baby boom generation. Today, people collect everything from lunch boxes, baseball cards, salt and pepper shakers, stamps, coins, to cars and antique furniture. Any item in the world that has a demand can be considered a collectible and is open to the collectible hobby industry. The toys given out in McDonald’s happy meals are often collected. Beanie Babies also have had their place in the hearts of collectors as well.

Getting The Maximum Value For Collectibles

Posted by teenhobbies on February 26, 2008

Getting the maximum amount of money for collectibles is the wish of every hobbyist. It is usually possible to get maximum prices for your collectibles if you follow certain rules. It is not difficult to follow these rules. However, remember that by following these or any other rules, you do not have a guarantee of a maximum price for your collectibles. But, it will give you a guide line that if followed, may help you to get better value for your collectibles than if you hadn’t followed the guidelines. The values of collectibles are greatly dependent on who buys your collectibles.

Finding buyers for your collectibles is not as difficult as in the past, thanks to advances in communication and technology. First, find out if the market exists for your particular collectible. You can go to a shop keeper, auctioneer or even sales agents to sell your collectible. They will be very happy to sell your collectible, and will charge you with their expenses. If you don’t know how much the dealer will pay you for your collectible, then visit a dealer and ask. Typically dealers or resellers will pay you 25 to 35 percent of the retail price of your collectible if you want cash immediately. But, if you are willing to wait until your collectible is sold, then you may be able to get around 65% of the retail price.
